The Resilience Project (TRP)

In the Classroom with Year 4

Recently Year 4 completed a TRP Empathy lesson on ‘Different Perspectives.’ Year 4 looked at the importance of seeing situations from other people’s perspectives. They were guided to apply their understanding of perspective taking and empathetic strategies in scenarios where they may encounter differing perspectives emphasising the importance of empathy.

Year 4 discussed acknowledging that each person has varying attitudes, backgrounds, experiences, and values can also influence an individual’s perspective. Each student was able to suggest strategies as to how people with differing perspectives can approach each other with empathy.

This incorporated Year 4 completing an activity on ‘Drawing with Perspective.’ They were read a series of instructions to follow along and draw in their student journals. Coming together at the end of the drawing, it was great to see the different way each person had interpreted these instructions to create a unique picture based on their own perspectives. They really had to think about what each instruction of the drawing might look like for them.

Key takeaways from,

Flynn- “It’s ok to be different.”

Francis- “The lesson was useful. You think of things differently and can try and solve problems using the strategies.”

Issy- “Just because you get the same instructions, doesn’t mean they are the same.”

Bodhi- “It’s ok to see things to other people differently.”

Ruby- “It is good to be different.”
